Calling all chef lecturers and catering students! Entries are now open for the 2018/9 Country Range Student Chef Challenge.

The search is on to find teams of talented students to compete in the most prestigious event in the student catering calendar.

Following paper judging and a series of heats and semi-finals, the Challenge will culminate in a live final at ScotHot in March 2019 – and we’d love to see a Birchall Foodservice college

Back garden catering helps fundraising

Again, our position as a food and drinks supplier enabled us to ensure charity walkers were suitably fed and watered by providing a catering hub, complete with gin and prosecco bar, at the annual Pendle Pub Walk.

The event, held on June 16, saw over 2,600 walkers braving the 10-mile/17-venue trek whilst raising funds for Burnley and Pendleside Hospice.

Following a record £80,000 raised last year, this year’s event is envisaged to support a similar level of income for the hospice.

Company chairman, Colin Birchall, who allowed the catering hub to be stationed in his garden, which was on the pub walk route, said: “It was an overwhelming success. Who knew that I could cram that many people into my back garden?! The atmosphere was fantastic and I’m thrilled that Birchall Foodservice was able to be a part of such a brilliant and vital fundraising event.”

Swinging into action

It was our privilege to assist a special charity golf day in July to help raise funds for golfer Robert Holden, from Rawtenstall, who is hoping to compete for Team GB in the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi next year. He is hoping to bag a second gold medal after winning one at the Winter Games in 2013 in South Korea!

Our goodie bags and halfway refreshments for the competitors at Rossendale Golf Club – were just the cup of ‘tee’!

When a customer invited our business development manager Gary Bastow to take part in a charity bike ride, he was “wheely” excited!

He joined the team of cyclists from the Cavendish Pavilion in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales to take on the grueling 75-mile challenge from the Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey to Chatsworth in Derbyshire on June 13.

“It was an ace day but a really testing 75 miles," says Gary. “The 2nd and 3rd stages took us through some beautiful Derbyshire countryside and was very challenging on the climbs.

“Lord Burlington himself also rode and what a lovely chap he is. We all had excellent meal at Chatsworth before being bused back home.”

We were happy to donate refreshments on the day, with our very own Krissy Fremont giving up her time to help the organisation on the day.

The event raised a whopping £14,600 for Hospitality Action, a charity which helps people working in the hospitality industry(www.hospitality.org.uk). Hospitality Action will be one of our favoured charities going forward.

National award retention marks perfect end to the year

A perfect end to 2017 – by retaining the much-coveted national award.

Birchall Foodservice won the Federation of Wholesale Distributors Gold Medal for Wholesale Service to Caterers for the second year running at a glittering event held at Old Billingsgate, London, on November 30. The award was presented by TV personality Angus Deayton.

Our fifth generation family business, based on Burnley Bridge Business Park has also won three gongs at the Red Rose Business Awards: Family Business of the Year, Employer of the Year (for the second year running) and the Customer Service Award, plus the Business of the Year title at the Burnley Business Awards. In addition, customer care manager Hayley Wilkinson won the Customer Relations Award at Lancashire’s Sub36 Awards.

Managing director Justin Birchall commented: “It has been a truly phenomenal year for us, and retaining this national award is the icing on the cake.

“To compete and come out on top against the country’s finest foodservice wholesalers is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the hard work and dedication of our wonderful team of employees.”

The judges commented: “Birchall’s has built its strategy on delivering a better experience for the caterer. Field sales, telesales and drivers all play a huge part in personalising service for each customer, and this year has seen the introduction of three new information brochures, and hosted events in the new development kitchen facility.”

Caring Hayley receives top accolade

Our inspirational customer care manager has been honoured for her creativity and passion.

Hayley Wilkinson, scooped Customer Relations Award at Lancashire’s Sub36 awards.

The awards celebrate employees and business owners under the age of 36, who are working in the county.

Hayley joined Birchall Foodservice as a teenager and is now in her 13th year, having worked her way up from a customer care advisor to manager, heading up a team of nine full-time and one part-time advisor.

On winning the award, Hayley said: “I’m over the moon to have won! I love helping people and being able to find a solution. After all, the success of our business lies in the success of our customers. The majority of companies are too rigid in their structures - but we take great satisfaction in never saying ‘no’. This ‘make it happen’ attitude is ingrained in the company’s ethos and is what makes us stand out from our competitors.”

The judges commented: “Hayley is creative, empathetic and passionate about her work. Putting the customer first is what she lives and breathes. Her loyalty and continued enthusiasm makes her a true asset.”

Company director Louise Birchall added: “We’re extremely lucky to have Hayley heading up our customer care team. She just has that special ‘something’, the ability to make things happen, and always with a cheerful demeanour.”

The judging panel said: “Birchalls now have a state of the art facility on Burnley Bridge Business Park, and showed strong all round performance with year on year growth, clear plans for future growth with innovative new services combined with a strong commitment to its workforce, the local community and reducing its carbon footprint.”
This latest award comes just three months after the company’s success at the Red Rose Business Awards, where they scooped a hat-trick of accolades: Family Business of Year, Employer of the Year, and the Customer Service award.

Set for more expansion!

Just two and a half years after moving to larger premises, a successful family business has its sights set on further expansion.

Award-winning Birchall Foodservice more than doubled the size of their HQ when they purchased Cobalt House on Burnley Bridge Business Park in January 2015. But with the business growing faster than predicted, they are now reaching capacity status at their new home.

In response, the company has this week purchased a connecting site, securing the opportunity for future development.

The two-acre site currently houses an obsolete two-storey office/workshop complex, which will be demolished to make way for a warehouse expansion. In the short term, the surrounding land will help ease site congestion for visitor parking, along with the company’s expanding delivery fleet.

Company MD Justin Birchall said: “Having more than doubled our warehouse space by relocating to this site only 30 months ago, we hadn‘t predicted that our growth at this stage would be as big as it is. Obviously we’re really pleased but we needed to ensure we have plans in place to facilitate the next stage of our growth.

“Therefore the adjacent site becoming available was extremely fortuitous and, despite the challenges of tackling a brownfield site, we are determined to develop this location into a productive facility benefitting the company, its employees and the community.” 

High-flying foodservice wholesaler nets a hat-trick of awards

A high-flying foodservice business has scooped three major trophies at a prestigious Red Rose awards night.

Birchall Foodservice was named Family Business of Year and Employer of the Year, as well as winning the Customer Service award, at the Red Rose Business Awards held at Blackpool Winter Gardens on March 9.  

The hat-trick of awards follows on from the company’s success at the same event last year when they were named Employer of the Year 2016.

Company MD Justin Birchall said: “We’re over the moon to have retained our Employer of the Year title, as well as winning the two other categories that we entered this year.

“We feel honoured and humbled that our hard work and dedication to both our customers and our employees has been recognised and rewarded, and want to thank each and every member of the team for their continued support.”
